Durations of the Degrees and Diplomas in Canada

DOCTORAL OR PHD
A minimum of 2-5 years of full-time study for doctoral programs is required after masters.

MASTERS
Masters degrees comprise of at least 2 years of full-time studies including a thesis (a long essay based on original research), practicum (Co-op) or research paper .

PG DIPLOMA / GRADUATE CERTIFICATE
Generally are of 1 year duration and exceptionally of two years as well.

UNDERGRADUATE
Bachelors degree consists of four years of full-time study .

UG DIPLOMA (Post Secondary Diploma)
A UG Diploma generally comprises of two or three years of full time study . 2 year program is a Diploma and 3 year program is an Advance Diploma.

English Language Requirements for international students

• For UG Diploma Programs, IELTS 6.0 with no band less than 5.5 is required
• For Bachelors Degree, TOEFL iBT (only accepted by Universities) minimum score of 79 or IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 is required
• For PG Diploma Programs, TOEFL iBT (only accepted by Universities) minimum score of 88 or IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 is required. (Some universities may require higher scores)
• For Masters Programs, TOEFL iBT (only accepted by Universities) minimum score of 88 or IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 is required. (Some universities may require higher scores)
• However by and large for SPP Colleges, IELTS is compulsory.

Designated Learning Institutions

To apply for a study permit on or after 1st June 2014, a international student will need to have a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution.

Each province and territory in Canada is responsible for designating educational institutions at the post-secondary level that may enroll international students on or after 1st June 2014. This list of designated learning institutions can be found on the below mentioned link.

If a study permit application is made on or after 1st June 2014 and the letter of acceptance is from an institution that is not designated for international students, the visa application will be refused.

IELTS: The International English Language Testing System

Exam Type: Standardized test. Available in 2 modules: “Academic”, “General training”.
Knowledge Skills Tested: Listening, reading, writing and speaking of the English language
Purpose: To assess the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers.
Exam Duration: 2 hours, 55 minutes.

TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language

Nature of Exam: Internet Based Test (iBT)
Total Score: TOEFL iBT is out of 120
Exam Duration: 4 hours
Exam Fee: $190

COST OF EDUCATION:

Criteria for International Students to work while studying in Canada

Students are eligible to work part time on or off campus from day one.

Study permits will automatically authorize the holder to work on/off-campus for up to 20 hours per week during the academic session and full-time (i.e. 40 hours per week) during scheduled breaks without the need to apply for a separate work permit. The study permit holder should be pursuing academic, vocational or professional training of six months or more that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate at a Designated Learning Institution.

Co-op & Internship Programs: Many of the programs have inbuilt internships of one or two semesters which provides an opportunity for the student to get first hand exposure and experience in Industry relating to his or her area of study.

• Internships are for lesser time period i.e. 15 days to 30 days and may or may not be paid
• Co-ops are for a semester or more and are mostly paid.

Post Study Work Visa

All international students who have graduated from a Canadian post-secondary institution are eligible for Post Study Work Visa to gain valuable Canadian work experience. To be eligible for a Post Study Work Visa, international students

• Should have studied full-time for at least eight months preceding the completion of their program and have graduated from a Designated Learning Institution
• Must have completed and passed the program of study and received written notification that they are eligible to obtain their degree, diploma, or certificate
• Must apply for a post study work permit within 90 days of receiving written confirmation from their academic institution that they have met the requirements of their program
• Must have a valid study permit when applying for the post study work permit
• The Post Study Work Visa provides no restrictions on the type of employment and no requirement of a job offer.
  1 year Study – 1 year of Post Study Work Visa
  2 years Study – up to 3 years of Post Study Work Visa
